Printable May Crowning Coloring Sheet HERE
Our 'Take Mary Home Baskets' have been among our most popular Passport to Family Faith Activity. Here is a Marian activity you can do at home with your family to Honor Our Blessed Mother in a special way during the month of May when we honor all mothers especially our special Mother Mary.
Soon we would be celebrating our May Crowning at Church. Though we cannot gather for this beautiful proclamation of our faith, we hope you will celebrate in your homes! Make this a family celebration and invite everybody to join in.
If you have a statue of Our Lady, inside or outside, choose a prominent space for her – a place that you pass by and will see regularly, clean the area, and place Our Blessed Mother Mary in the space.
If you don’t have a statue to use, go ahead and print a picture – maybe a coloring page; or perhaps you have an image of Our Lady on a prayer card or something…
• Make a crown for her – use what you have on hand like
o pipe cleaners
o construction paper with gems – tin foil and sharpies make very pretty gems
o silk flowers
o pom-poms, buttons, string and beads
o flowers made from tissue paper…so many options!
• Do you have a backdrop? A piece of fabric, a curtain, or even a pretty picture could work
• Add some decor to your space; maybe a candle, a painted rock, a colored picture – anything that you think will make it look lovely
• Pick some flowers, or even leaves/branches, and arrange them to set in your space
• Visit youtube and select your favorite Marian Hymns – maybe something grand and heavenly or maybe something easy for the little ones to sing; if you can’t decide, call Grandma/Nana/ your catechists – I’m confident they will have suggestions!
You’re ready to go. Play your music, set up your space, and place your gifts before Our Blessed Mother Mary! She loves everything we offer to her! Take a moment every day to pray with her; every time we call on her, she takes our prayers, makes them perfectly beautiful, and brings them to God. She asks Him to grant our petitions if they are good for us and those we love.
Why do we honor Mary in this way? Well, for a few reasons.
Mary was prepared by God from the first moment of her life to be Jesus’ Mom. What does this mean? It means that God filled her heart and soul with perfect love for Him – Mary NEVER chose her own ideas over God’s plans! So, when the time came for Jesus to come and live among His people, God knew Mary would do whatever He asked. And that makes her the best example for us – our model to follow, better than any super-hero!
When Jesus was on the cross, He looked down and saw His friend John standing with Mary and told them to take care of one another. We must remember that everything Jesus said is meant for ALL people – not just the people who were with Him at that moment!
Another way to think about it is to remember that Jesus was always obedient to the traditions of His faith including the 10 Commandments, so He would have perfectly lived the 4th Commandment, “Honor your father and your mother.” And we know we are supposed to imitate Jesus in all things!
We hope you are able to honor Mary in this way, asking her to care for us and to be your example in following God’s plans for your life!
Send us photos of your May crowning and shrine so we can share them here in our slide show!
